Portobello MArket

For Jean Paul Gaultier, the bizarre world that was London in the post-punk era- Portobello MArket, the King's Road, black-clad 'concierges' with green hair- demonstrated to perfection street fashion's talent for mix and match, and offered him a rich vein of inspiration.

Jean-Paul Gaultier made a BIG splash during his 30th anniversary show at Fashion week in Paris.

Jean Paul Gaultier/Regine Chopinot: Le DéFilé

The show consists of the costumes and videos from a 1985 dance piece called Le Défile (fashion parade) and is about a collaboration of two colossal talents, fashion designer Jean Paul Gaultier, and choreographer Regine Chopinot.

The result is a magical, amusing, and inspiring mix of fashion and fantasy. There are many of Gaultier’s trademark fashion statements from the 80’s, including the cone bras with tassels, but you can see how he takes the ideas further in creating something way beyond fashion. For example, cable knit dresses have always been in Gaultier’s runway collections, but the vanilla knit dress with exaggerated padded hips and the Little Bo Peep lace leggings, makes it go from fashion to fantasy and costume.
